At its thickest, the density of the trees in the Avalonian forest was such that perpetual night existed on the forest floor. Very little light could penetrate the upper canopy of leaves, and the dappled sunlight that occasionally trickled through danced on the ancient soil like fireflies.
In the dark heart of this forest, a limestone crag jutted obliquely from the earth, forced upward millions of years previously by volcanic movement. Into this sizeable protuberance a cave had been quarried, back in antiquity, by Elven Folk who had used it as a form of hunting

Under the charge of Governor Aulus Plautius, the four legions were ordered to consolidate the invasion. Legion XX Valeria remained at Camulodunon, where they built a fortress. Legion II Augusta, after receiving support from Cogidubnus, swept across the southwest and pacified the feral Durotrige tribe before building their fortress at Isca*. Legion IX Hispana marched north and established their own base at Lindum**, and Legion XIV Gemina headed nothwest through the Midlands and sited their own fortress at Viroconium***. The sturdy oak gates that protected the entrance to Calleva stood resolutely closed. The earthen ramparts extended on either side, curving into a circle which enclosed the settlement. These ramparts, crowned by timber palisades, were lined with Briton warriors, standing still proud, sporting long spears in their right hands, round wooden shields rimmed with iron on their left forearms, long swords dangling at their waists. They watched, solemn and silent, as Legio II Augusta approached.
